SInterplay: how singers can communicate effectively with a band and inspire confident, collaborative performance Too often singers and instrumentalists are uncomfortable with each other when paired together. Even many well-intentioned singers cannot effectively lead a band, causing confusion and even friction on the bandstand. In this workshop, we’ll seek to get singers comfortable when working with a rhythm section, covering both specific topics like count-offs and how best to communicate arrangements, and broader topics like empathy and listening. Some points we’ll review are: Trusting yourself and you band - at every level Building confidence - we are all in this together. Listening more than you’re singing. You don’t have to know it all The right tempos and keys to try out a new song Countoffs and intros Rubato basics Responsibility to the rhythm Talking down your arrangements efficiently Sing the feel How to lead the band with your singing alone Through this workshop, we hope to make singers more confident when working with their instrumentalist peers, leading to more mutual respect and amazing opportunities for collaboration and meaningful music making.
