In this practical clinic, vocalists will learn a clear six-step method for transforming a song’s melody into an improvised scat solo. Focusing on rhythmic and melodic manipulation, participants will explore how to develop improvisations that grow naturally from the melody itself. Beginners will gain confidence in their ability to improvise, while more experienced singers will discover new tools to expand their creativity and expression on the bandstand. Trombonist, vocalist, and educator Hailey Brinnel is based in Philadelphia and has performed at major venues including Dizzy’s Club, the Kennedy Center, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Birdland, and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. A finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, she has performed with artists such as The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Philly Pops, Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, Anat Cohen, Ingrid Jensen, Camille Thurman, and Terell Stafford. Her recordings include "I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles" and "Beautiful Tomorrow," and she is an active educator on the faculties of The University of the Arts and the Kimmel Center, presenting workshops and clinics on jazz improvisation and scat singing.
