In this practical and inspiring workshop, acclaimed vocalist and educator Rosana Eckert explores the art of melodic embellishment—those subtle alterations that bring personality, nuance, and emotional meaning to a song. Rather than singing a melody exactly as written, great jazz singers shape phrases the way we naturally shape speech. Rosana will demonstrate how small melodic changes—passing tones, rhythmic shifts, and expressive inflections—can transform a straightforward melody into a more personal and conversational performance. Through listening, examples, and guided exercises, participants will learn how to develop melodic flexibility while still honoring the character of the song. Perfect for singers who want to move beyond simply “singing the notes,” this session will help you discover how melodic alterations can make your phrasing feel more natural, expressive, and uniquely your own. Rosana Eckert is a Grammy®-recognized jazz vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and producer whose warm voice and musical artistry have captivated audiences worldwide. A professional singer for more than 30 years, she has toured internationally as both performer and master teacher, appearing in Brazil, Taiwan, Sweden, China, Norway, and across Europe. She has been featured at iconic venues including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, where she performed with Bobby McFerrin on his Grammy-nominated album VOCAbuLarieS. Rosana’s creative work can also be heard on Lyle Mays’ Grammy-winning Eberhard and Kings Return’s 2023 Grammy-nominated recording of “How Deep Is Your Love,” which she co-produced. As a recording artist, she has released five acclaimed solo albums, including the “bright and innovative” Sailing Home. She also co-leads the Brazilian jazz-fusion band Brasuka, whose debut album A Vida Com Paixão received four stars from DownBeat and appeared on numerous “Best of 2021” lists. Rosana teaches jazz voice, vocal pedagogy, and songwriting at the University of North Texas. She is also an in-demand studio singer and voiceover artist heard on hundreds of recordings and commercials worldwide.
