You Gotta LEAD the Band
with Andrea Wolper, September 30, 3PM ET
服務說明
As Abbey Lincoln sang, “You Gotta Pay the Band.” But to sing jazz with confidence and authority, you’ve also got to lead the band. Whether you’re singing at open mics, going to jam sessions, or doing your own gigs, the ability to communicate clearly with the band in real time can make all the difference to how your songs go and how relaxed everyone feels. Yet even experienced singers can feel intimidated or uncertain when it comes to taking charge. In this workshop, we’ll break it down, starting with an overview of what singers need to be able convey, such as: • exactly what to tell the band before the song starts • counting off to communicate not just tempo, but also feel • verbal and non-verbal cuing Let’s face it: worrying about train wrecks, wondering if the band knows to come back at the bridge after solos, uncertainty about how to end the song—these are distractions that take us out of the musical moment. Once we know what we need to do and how to do it, we can let go of worries and sing with greater spontaneity, freedom, and joy. A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, veteran vocalist and songwriter Andrea Wolper has headlined in top clubs including the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club, Birdland, Mezzrow, and innumerable others, and she tours in the U.S. and beyond. Rooted in jazz traditions, her wide-ranging tastes and multidisciplinary talents have led her to forge her own path, making her music “forward thinking and consistently fresh.” Reviewers called Andrea’s most recent album, "Wanderlust” (Moonflower Music 2024) “magnificent,” “truly exceptional,” and praised Andrea as a “brilliant musical storyteller,” “exquisitely masterful,” “expressive and flawless in her phrasing.” She has also been noted as “a terrific arranger,” and her songwriting has been called "easily superior.” In addition to leading her own projects, she records and performs for other artists across jazz genres including the late vocal innovator Jay Clayton, freejazz bassist and composer William Parker, and the straight ahead Heavenly Big Band. Andrea teaches vocal technique, jazz singing, songwriting, and improvisation in her private studio and in workshops and master classes. www.andreawolper.com andreawolper.bandcamp.com
