What happens when the singer steps onto the stage without a band? In this creative and thought-provoking workshop, acclaimed vocalist and educator Christine Correa explores the art of solo vocal performance. Drawing inspiration from her recent concert project Alone, Not Lonely, Christine will share approaches to creating compelling performances using voice alone, as well as incorporating elements such as percussion, ambient sound, recorded media, and other nontraditional accompaniments. Through discussion, demonstration, and interactive exercises, participants will explore how to prepare repertoire, shape musical form, sustain audience engagement, and develop a personal artistic vision for solo performance. Christine will also invite singers to experiment with some of these concepts in real time, offering practical tools for expanding creative possibilities both on and off the bandstand. Whether you're interested in performing completely unaccompanied or simply looking for fresh ways to present your music, this session will challenge you to think beyond conventional formats and discover new dimensions of expression through the solo voice. Born in Bombay, India and now based in Brooklyn, vocalist Christine Correa is an acclaimed improviser, performer, and educator. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, she has performed and recorded with artists including Ran Blake, Steve Lacy, and John LaPorta, and has appeared at festivals and venues throughout the U.S., Europe, South America, Africa, and India. Christine is currently on the faculty of Columbia University’s Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program, Teachers College at Columbia University, and The New School. She has served as Director of the Maine Jazz Camp since 1994 and has presented workshops and master classes internationally.
