Details & Information

Andrea will sing a few songs for us live. Then we'll hear three volunteer singers perform and she'll give them feedback or discuss topics they're interested in. You can sing or just watch! Although vocalist, composer, and arranger Andrea Wolper started her professional career singing jazz standards, her eclectic tastes and multidisciplinary talents have led her to forge her own path. Her newest recording, “Wanderlust,” is an apt title for her peregrinations down the byways of improvisatory vocal jazz. Critics have called "Wanderlust”—her fourth album as leader—“magnificent,” “truly exceptional,” “an early candidate for year-end “Best Of’ lists,” and praised Andrea as a “brilliant musical storyteller,” “exquisitely masterful,” “expressive and flawless in her phrasing.” Andrea is one of the singers covered in The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide (Yanow, Backbeat Books). Cadence Magazine calls her songwriting "easily superior,” and she’s been awarded a number of composing residencies. She’s been called “a terrific arranger, taking new paths rather than expected ones.” A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, Andrea has appeared in top clubs including the Blue Note, Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, Mezzrow, the 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, and innumerable others, and she tours in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to leading her own groups, she records and performs for other artists across jazz genres, from holding a vocal chair with the straight ahead Heavenly Big Band to appearing in several performance and recording projects of free jazz bassist William Parker. She was a founding member of the improvising trio, TranceFormation, with Connie Crothers and Ken Filiano, and was a member of Jay Clayton’s Different Voices ensemble. Andrea teaches private voice lessons and master classes and workshops. She is a past President of International Women in Jazz, and served on the Advisory Board of the Jazz Vocal Coalition. She created and curated the "Why Not Experiment?" series at Whynot Jazz Room in New York City. Andrea offers singing lessons in her private studio, conducts clinics in jazz vocal performance, and teaches classes on songwriting and improvisation. A sampling of participant feedback: Her comments and suggestions are very inspirational. Don't know how she does it but she can "zero in" on some aspect of my performance and offer insight into what could make it more meaningful. I loved the workshop. I have such a clearer sense of what it is I need to work on now.
