Details & Information

Discover the fascinating craft of vocalese — the art of writing lyrics to existing instrumental jazz solos and compositions. In this workshop, acclaimed vocalist and educator Judy Niemack shares the techniques behind transforming iconic jazz improvisations into compelling vocal performances. Drawing on her experience writing more than 120 vocalese lyrics, including work with music by Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, and Kenny Dorham, Judy explores how to shape words that honor the phrasing, rhythm, and spirit of the original solo. A pioneering figure in vocal jazz education, Judy began her jazz training with legendary saxophonist Warne Marsh, who taught her to approach improvisation like a horn player. She made her recording debut with Marsh and bassist Eddie Gomez at the Village Vanguard and has since recorded 15 albums as a leader. An influential teacher for decades, she has served on the faculties of The New School, William Paterson University, and New York City College, and later became the first Professor of Vocal Jazz in Germany, leading the vocal department at the Jazz Institut Berlin until 2020. Whether you're interested in lyric writing, improvisation, or the connection between instrumental and vocal jazz traditions, this session offers rare insight from one of the masters of the vocalese art form.
