Inhabiting the Story: Lyric-driven Arranging and Reharmonization What happens when we let the lyrics lead the way? In this workshop, acclaimed vocalist, arranger and educator, Danielle Wertz, explores moving beyond "interpreting" a jazz standard to fully stepping inside the story and authentically making it your own. Beginning with tools for discovering, internalizing and expressing your own unique story within a given lyric, you will learn how to approach each song as a personal narrative. Diving deeper into a story in this way can lead to the realization that the music by the original composer doesn't quite match our unique relationship with the song anymore... so, now what? Danielle will demonstrate how thoughtful reharmonization and arranging can support and deepen your unique, authentic interpretation. This workshop is ideal for jazz vocalists of all levels who are ready to take a more personal and creative approach to their music, and to instrumentalists who are curious to learn more about a lyric-driven approach. Whether you’re preparing for a performance, developing repertoire, or seeking to nurture your artistic voice, this session will provide practical tools and inspiration to bring more meaning, connection, and originality to your artistry. Danielle Wertz is an award-winning vocalist, composer, and arranger whose work blurs the boundaries between jazz, folk, and contemporary classical music. Praised by DownBeat Magazine for her “remarkably intimate, expressive and poignant” voice, she first gained recognition as the youngest semi-finalist in the 2015 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. Her debut album Intertwined (2017) and follow-up Other Side (2023) both received critical acclaim for their genre-blending artistry and emotional depth, with Paris Move calling her “an artist to watch.” Wertz has since emerged as a leading creative voice in cross-genre performance. Her Joni Mitchell/Leonard Cohen project Both Sides Now—co-created with Robbie Schaefer—earned rave reviews and national touring success, and her recent big band collaboration Silent Course with Remy Le Boeuf was hailed by DownBeat as “a sound garden of delights.” With upcoming residencies, commissions, and her first European tour on the horizon, Wertz continues to define a singular path as one of today’s most compelling and adventurous vocal artists.
